Spotlight: Linglingay Cultural Dance Troupe

The Linglingay Cultural Dance Troupe (or Linglingay) is a Philippine performing arts group headed by Engr. Ramon Acob. His group performed two Philippine-inspired numbers, "Estudiantina" and "Ewan," during the Miss Oahu Filipina 2019 Scholarship Pageant. Acob was also the pageants' Opening Number choreographer. The Contestants learned and danced to "Itik-Itik.:

“Estudiantina” is a Spanish-inspired dance of the Philippines. The country was under the rule of Spain for more than three hundred years, during which time local culture was markedly influenced. Young women students at that time were called estudiantina, and male students were called estudiante. This dance was originally performed by women carrying a book, a fan, a umbrella, or other items associated with female students. There are many regional versions of this dance, among which, men have been included as performers.

“Ewan” is a non-traditional folkdance created from the creative imaginations of the group’s choreographer. “Ewan”, a Tagalog term which simply means “I Don’t Know”, or “I am not Sure”, is a song popularized by one of the Philippines most famous groups Apo Hikings Society. It tells of a young man who professes his love for a pretty young woman. While it is obvious that the young woman also loves the young man, she plays “hard to get”, and simply says “Ewan” when asked by his suitor if she loves him too. The young man does not realize that “Ewan” means “Yes” for an answer to her question.

"Itik-Itik" is a mimetic folk dance in the Philippines. It originated in the province of Surigao in Mindanao. In Itik-itik (from the Tagalog word “itik” for duck), the dance steps imitate the movements of ducks among rice paddies and swamplands, such as wading, splashing water into their backs, flying, and walking with short, choppy steps. The dance is hugely popular in the Philippines, and the dance has many variations of steps from which the dancers choose and combine.
